One of the most common questions we hear from people considering their first RISE session is surprisingly simple:
"What actually happens?"
It's a fair question.
Most people have never experienced anything quite like RISE before. It's not a fitness class. It's not a dance lesson. It's not a nightclub and it's not a workshop. Because it sits somewhere between a number of different experiences, people are often unsure what to expect before they arrive.
The good news is that you don't need any previous experience, dance ability or special preparation. You simply need to arrive with an open mind. Every RISE session follows a similar flow, creating enough structure for people to feel comfortable while leaving plenty of space for individual experience.

The experience begins before the music starts. As people arrive, they are welcomed into the space and given an opportunity to settle in. One of the first things we ask participants to do is put their phones away. For many people, this is the first noticeable shift.
Modern life is filled with notifications, messages and constant demands for attention. Even during social experiences, it's easy to find ourselves checking screens, taking photos or thinking about what is happening elsewhere.
At RISE, we invite people to leave those distractions behind for a while. The simple act of putting a phone away creates a clear boundary between everyday life and the experience that is about to begin. It helps people become more present, more aware of their surroundings and more connected to the room they are entering.
The atmosphere is calm, welcoming and intentionally free from pressure. There is no expectation to introduce yourself, network or immediately start participating. People are encouraged to arrive exactly as they are.
As the music begins, participants are gently invited into movement. This is often the point where people realise they don't need to worry about getting anything right. There is no choreography to learn and no instructor demonstrating steps. Nobody is watching to see whether you're moving correctly.
The focus is simply on responding to the music in whatever way feels natural. Some people begin dancing almost immediately. Others take time to observe, listen and gradually settle into the rhythm. Some move energetically while others start more gently. All of those experiences are completely normal.
One of the things that makes RISE unique is that every person is free to find their own relationship with the music and movement. The room may be sharing the same soundtrack, but everyone is having their own individual experience within it.

As the session develops, the energy naturally evolves. The music gradually builds, rhythms become more immersive and the room begins to find a collective momentum. This isn't something that is forced or directed. It emerges naturally as people become more comfortable and engaged. Live percussion often plays an important role during this stage of the experience.
The combination of DJing, rhythm and movement creates an atmosphere that feels both energising and grounding at the same time. People often describe losing track of time as they become absorbed in the music and the present moment. Without phones, conversations or external distractions competing for attention, there is space to simply experience what is happening.
For many participants, this is where a sense of freedom begins to emerge.
Although everybody moves differently, there is often a noticeable sense of connection that develops throughout the room. People aren't connecting through conversation. They are connecting through shared experience. A room full of strangers gradually becomes a community for a couple of hours. There is a shared understanding that everyone is there for the same reason, even if their personal motivations are different. Some people come for wellbeing. Some come for the music. Some are exploring sobriety. Others are simply curious.
What unites them is the willingness to be present. That shared intention creates an atmosphere that many people find difficult to describe until they experience it for themselves.

As the session begins to draw to a close, the energy gradually softens. The music becomes calmer. The pace slows. Participants are given space to reconnect with their breathing, their bodies and the environment around them. This transition is an important part of the experience.
Rather than ending abruptly, the session creates an opportunity to reflect, reset and absorb everything that has happened. People often leave feeling energised yet grounded at the same time. There is a sense of clarity that comes from spending a couple of hours fully engaged in the present moment.
No two RISE sessions are exactly the same. Different groups create different atmospheres. Different venues create different dynamics. Each person arrives with their own expectations and leaves with their own experience. What remains consistent is the intention behind the format.
To create a welcoming space where people can step away from distractions, connect through music and movement, and spend time being fully present. Some people leave feeling lighter. Some leave feeling calmer. Some leave feeling inspired. Others simply leave feeling like themselves again.
Whatever someone takes away from the experience, that's ultimately what RISE is about. Creating the conditions for people to reconnect with themselves, reconnect with others and leave feeling better than when they arrived.
